Story

Thanks for visiting the Col du Tourmalet Team Challenge page as part of the Amazing People Project.

The Amazing People Project is a campaign encouraging 250 people, to raise $250,000 over 250 days by doing something ‘amazing’ for themselves whilst doing something ‘amazing’ for charity.  You can find out more by watching this video.

The Col du Tourmalet Team Challenge involves six Middle Age Men in Lycra (MAMiLs) committing to climb one of the most infamous peaks in France which this year appears on stage 16 of the Tour de France.

To receive your sponsorship and donation to the Amazing People Project the team of 6 MAMiLs will complete the 19km climb from Luz-Saint-Sauveur to the peak within a team total of 18 hours or an average of three hours each.

Now if this doesn't sound "amazing" please read below to find out more about Tourmalet and you'll see that its not your average 19km!!

So who are the team?

Each team member is seeking to raise over $1,000 as part of The Amazing People Project and we have set ourselves a team goal of $9,000.

What is the Col du Tourmalet?

The Col du Tourmalet is one of the most famous climbs on the Tour de France. It has been included more than any other pass, starting in 1910 when the Pyrenees were first introduced.

It is situated in Midi-Pyrenees and belongs to the Pyrenees mountain range. Starting from Luz Saint Sauveur, the Col du Tourmalet ascent is 19 km long. Over this distance we will climb 1404 heightmeters with an average gradient of almost 8%.  When finished we will be at 2115 metres above sea level (almost as high as Australia's highest peak Mount Kosciuszko).

During the climb we can expect a combination of heat, cold, rain and wind as we ascend through different landscapes before reaching the peak and the famous sculpture of the Tour climber.  We can also look forward to meeting many other clombers from around the world and the obligatory drunk Tour followers who hang around for days after the Tour to enjoy the scenery.  To find out mor about the Col and read some amazing stories go to this address http://www.climbbybike.com/climb.asp?Col=Col%20du%20Tourmalet%20&qryMountainID=26

Our team target is $9,000 and to reach it we need your help.  You can sponsor us to achieve our goal by clicking on Donate Now (right).  We really would appreciate your support and contribution to charity no matter how large or small as we know every bit counts.  If you do choose to donate it would be great if you could mention the name of who you are following in the comments.  However if you would prefer privacy we would be delighted to accept your anonymous support for the whole team.

All money raised will be distributed evenly amongst these five charities:

The Smile Foundation, The Blackdog Institute, The McGrath Foundation, MS Research, Australia and Ozharvest.

Thanks for your interest, and don’t forget you too can join the cause and ‘be amazing’ for yourself, whilst being amazing for others.

The Amazing People Project 2012 Charity Community

There are so many amazing charities in Australia, working to do great things across all areas of our community. Choosing the right charities for The Amazing People Project was in itself quite a challenge! Everyone has a cause dear to their heart and so we tried to choose charities that would cover different categories in our community. We created the criteria that the charity needed to be Australian, able to specify what the money would go towards, be registered for tax deductions so we could receipt our sponsors, and not be primarily government funded. We wanted charities that were doing amazing things for kids, youth, care, cure/research and general community. After several months of research, talking to different charities, these are the 5 ‘amazing’ charities we chose for the 2012 Amazing People Project.
